Hedges and Me #4

"Scientific ideas, because they can be demonstrated or disproved, are embraced or rejected on the basis of quantifiable evidence.  But human relationships and social organizations interact and function effectively when they are not rigid, when they accept more ambiguity and when they take into account the irrational.  Politics, for example, is an endeavor that concerns the channeling and managing of human drives and desires.  It is only fitfully in contact with reason.  This profound understanding of the irrational element in politics led Freud to write his masterpiece, Civilization and Its Discontents.  Attempts to deny the irrational increase the potency of the irrational." (Page 55 - "I Don't Believe in Atheists")

This explains much of the current state of affairs in the USA what with the Republicans in both the House and Senate doing whatever it takes to make sure POTUS Obama fails and is a one term POTUS no matter how much damage that does to We, the people, and our democracy.  It's irrational but that's what I should have EXPECTED of the opposition.  They make no sense to me but again they should not make any sense because they are behaving irrationally.  So disappointing that POTUS Obama has tried and I think still is trying to deal with the Republicans with reason.  He's not an extremist but they are -- they being the Republicans.  They are extremists acting irrationally and their most powerful action is and continues to be projecting their irrational extremism toward POTUS Obama.  And They, the - small minded - people have been intoxicated with their irrational extremism.
